Today MJM Turns 47

Forty-seven years, one family, one building in Miami Gardens. Forty-four thousand square feet, forty-plus machines, eighty-plus people, and everything a sheet metal part needs happening under the same roof. Here is what is on our floor.

MJM Manufacturing 47 years anniversary badge, 1979 to 2026, Miami Gardens, Florida

Today is our 47th anniversary. Mike Mijares started MJM in 1979 out of a bay the size of a two-car garage, with a conviction that he could hold a tighter tolerance than the shop down the street. He is still here every day. His son Alex, our COO, grew up on this floor and now runs sales and operations. When he came on, MJM had 22 active accounts.

Today we serve more than 650 active customers out of a single 44,000 square foot plant, with another 8,500 square feet going up right now. Cut, punch, form, roll, weld, machine, hardware, deburr, inspect, ship. Nothing gets brokered out and no part disappears to a second shop for three weeks. On our birthday, here is the whole floor.

The People

Eighty-Plus Employees, Many of Them Here for Decades

More than eighty people work here, and a lot of them have been with MJM twenty, thirty, even forty years. In an industry that cannot find skilled fabricators and cannot keep the ones it finds, that is the number we are proudest of.

It is also the part of our capability that never shows up on an equipment list. A part you ran with us in 2010 comes back the same way today because, in a lot of cases, the same person is still making it.

One detail that matters more than it sounds: the entire building is air conditioned. In South Florida, in a metal shop, that is not standard. We did it because people who are comfortable do better work and stay longer. Forty-seven years in, we would make the same call again.

Cutting

Five Amada Lasers. Four of Them Fiber.

A shop our size usually runs one laser, maybe two. We run five, all Amada, all on 5′ × 10′ tables: an Amada Ventis 3015 AJ with Locus Beam Control, three Ensis 3015 AJ fiber systems, and an LC 2415 A III CO2 machine.

The Ventis is the one worth knowing about. Its Locus Beam Control lets a 4kW machine cut at roughly the level of a 6kW one, and you see it in edge quality and in cycle time on thicker material.

Five lasers means cutting almost never becomes the bottleneck. A hot job does not sit behind a production run, and a machine down for service does not move a delivery date. That is most of the reason we hit the dates we quote.

Welding

Nine Fiber Laser Welders — and Three Now Run Dual Wire

Our welding department runs nine 2kW-class handheld fiber laser systems, a mix of LightWELD 1500 and LightWELD 2000 units. Fiber laser welding lays a narrow weld with a very small heat-affected zone — far less distortion than TIG on thin material, and on a lot of parts, no grinding at all.

Three of those machines now carry Serra LightWIRE dual wire feeders, and that is the newest thing on our floor. Laser welding has always had one real limitation: joint fit. A focused beam is excellent when two edges are tight together and useless when there is a gap it drops straight through. Dual wire feed solves it. Two wires feed into the weld pool at once with the laser centered between them, filling the gap as it welds.

It runs on aluminum as well as steel and stainless, which matters, because aluminum is exactly where fit-up gaps punish you hardest and where adding filler cleanly by hand is toughest.

Forming

Nine Press Brakes, the Largest 240 Tons and Fourteen Feet

Nine Amada press brakes, and the 240 ton, 14 foot machine takes long formed parts that most shops have to splice, farm out, or turn down. Alongside them run three Knuth plate rollers to seven feet — people hear “sheet metal” and picture flat blanks and bends, so rolled and formed sections are worth asking us about before you send them somewhere else.

Deburring & Finishing

Three Timesavers Lynx Wet Deburring Machines

Every laser-cut, punched and formed part comes off the machine with burrs and sharp edges. How a shop takes them off is the difference between a part that feels finished and one that has obviously been handled.

We run three Timesavers Lynx machines, model 37MWT-DB-60, for wet deburring and surface finishing. Wet processing matters. It takes edges down consistently across a full run, with no heat into the part and no dust, instead of the variation you get when someone is chasing edges by hand at the end of a long day.

Quality

A 24-Camera Inspection Cell, and a New Quality Room Going Up Now

Our Amada Fabri-Vision system scans a complete part against the customer’s CAD model and produces a full dimensional report in minutes, not hours. Next to it we run a Keyence LM-X non-contact measurement system and a Keyence XM-5000 handheld probe CMM. First article reports come out of real measurement against the model, and every dimensional report is archived to the job.

We are adding 8,500 square feet to the building right now, and a purpose-built quality control room is the centerpiece of it. After forty-seven years of quality living wherever we could fit it, it is getting a proper home.

Two more things worth knowing. Every job carries a barcoded traveler through every operation, run on software we wrote ourselves instead of an off-the-shelf system we would have had to bend the shop around — so any part traces end to end, receiving dock to shipping label. And we keep quality and technical records indefinitely. Not seven years. Call us about a part we ran in 2004 and we will pull the drawing, the material certification and the inspection record.

Credentials

Certified Where It Counts, and a Minority-Owned Small Business

Our quality system is certified to both ISO 9001:2015 and AS9100 Rev D, and we are ITAR registered with the U.S. Department of State. On the welding side we hold AWS D17.1 for aerospace fusion welding, along with D1.1, D1.2 and D9.1M, plus Lloyd’s Register certification.

MJM is also a second-generation, family-owned, minority-owned business — NMSDC MBE certified and DBE certified, and a small business under 13 CFR Part 121. If you carry supplier diversity requirements, that is a box we actually tick rather than one we found a way around.

Made Here

Made in This Building, Start to Finish

Every part we ship is made in the United States, in this building. Every pound of raw material we buy is sourced in the United States and arrives with mill certifications. There is no overseas step in the middle of a part that nobody mentions.

Even the nitrogen is ours. Three generators run on site at up to 99.9999% purity. Nitrogen is what gives a clean, oxide-free edge on stainless and aluminum, and a shop that buys it in bulk is always one late delivery away from a stopped job. Ours comes out of the air in our own building, at the same purity in March as in November.

Send Us a Print

Forty-seven years in, we have built a shop that can take a job from raw sheet to finished, inspected, documented parts without it ever leaving the building. If you are working on something and are not certain it fits what we do, send us the drawing. Quotes go back in 24 to 48 hours.
