What Reshoring Actually Looks Like Right Now

The headlines say manufacturing is flooding back. The data is more specific than that, and knowing the difference tells you whether your program is one that moves.

The Reshoring Initiative counted roughly 244,000 U.S. manufacturing jobs announced through reshoring and foreign direct investment in 2024, and more than 2 million announced since 2010. Announcements are not groundbreakings. Aggregate manufacturing construction spending peaked in mid-2024 and has come down since. So the broad boom is uneven.

What is not uneven is data center construction. It went from about $9.5 billion annualized in January 2020 to roughly $47 billion by January 2026, with year-over-year growth above 30 percent for four straight years. That buildout has reached our doorstep: an AI-ready data center is under construction at NW 120th Terrace in Westview, about four miles from our floor, with more announced across Miami-Dade and Palm Beach County.

The parts that follow that buildout are racks, enclosures, cable management, air containment, brackets, chassis, and power distribution hardware. Those are sheet metal parts. They are heavy, they are bulky, they ship badly, and they change revision often. That combination is why they come back to a domestic shop first.

What We Need To Quote A Part You Currently Buy Overseas

Most reshoring quotes stall for one reason: the buyer has a purchase order history and a photograph, and nothing else. Your overseas supplier owned the engineering. Send us whatever you have and we will tell you within a day what is missing and how we close the gap.

Ideal package: a STEP or IGES model, a dimensioned PDF drawing, material and finish callouts, annual usage and order quantity, and a physical sample if one exists.

Workable package: a PDF drawing alone, or a sample part alone. We reverse engineer parts routinely. A sample plus a target quantity is enough to start.

Not enough: a photo with no dimensions and no sample. We will tell you that honestly rather than quote a number we cannot hold.

Known Failure Points

Five Things That Go Wrong In Overseas Drawing Packages

1. The flat pattern is baked into the print. Overseas shops often supply a developed blank dimensioned to their own tooling and K-factor. Run it on our brake and the formed part comes out wrong. We redevelop the flat from the finished geometry, not from their blank.

2. Material callouts are regional. A Chinese grade designation is not always a clean swap for a domestic one. Q235 is not A36. SPCC is not exactly CRS. We map it, tell you what changed, and flag anything that affects strength, corrosion, or finish.

3. Nobody knows who owns the tooling. Progressive dies, weld fixtures, and check gauges frequently stayed with the overseas supplier even when the contract said otherwise. Assume you are starting fresh and budget for it.

4. Tolerances were never real. The print says plus or minus 0.005 on a formed feature nobody ever inspected. We will tell you which callouts are driving cost and which ones you can open up without hurting the part.

5. The drawing does not match the part in the field. Revisions were made verbally over years. If you have a production sample, send it. Our Amada Fabri-Vision automated optical inspection system measures the part you actually use, not the part the drawing describes.

How It Goes

The Transition, Step By Step

Week 1 — Send the package. Models, prints, samples, annual usage. We quote in 24 to 48 hours and tell you exactly what is missing.

Week 1 to 2 — Design for manufacturability review. We flag the tolerances driving cost, the bend radii that need to change for domestic tooling, and the features that were drawn around your old supplier equipment. You decide what to change.

Week 2 to 4 — First article. Laser, form, weld, finish, inspect. Full dimensional report. You approve before we cut production.

Week 4 onward — Run in parallel. Do not cut the overseas cord on day one. Run us alongside your existing supply until you have two or three clean lots. Second-sourcing costs almost nothing and it is the whole point of bringing work back.

Ongoing — Blanket and release. Once volume is proven, put it on a blanket order. You get the price of an annual quantity without carrying an annual quantity in your warehouse.

Can you quote from a sample part with no drawing?

Yes. Send the sample and tell us the annual quantity. We reverse engineer it, produce a drawing and a model, and quote from that. You own the resulting documentation.

Will domestic cost more per piece?

Often yes on the piece price alone. Frequently no once freight, duty, tariffs, minimum order quantities, safety stock, and scrap are counted. Send us your current landed cost and we will tell you straight whether we can beat it.

What is your minimum order quantity?

One. We build prototypes and we build production. There is no minimum to get a first article in your hands.

How fast can you take over an existing part?

A quote in 24 to 48 hours, and a first article typically in two to four weeks depending on tooling, finish, and material availability. Simple laser and form parts move faster.

Do we have to move everything at once?

No, and you should not. Start with one or two parts, prove the quality and the delivery, then move the rest. Most of our largest accounts started with a single part.

Can you hold inventory for us?

Yes. Blanket orders with scheduled releases are standard here. You get annual-quantity pricing without carrying annual-quantity inventory.
