Precision Welding Services
Fiber laser, TIG, MIG and resistance spot welding under one roof, to AWS D17.1 (Lockheed Martin approved), AWS D1.1, D1.2 and D9.1M, inside an AS9100 Rev D quality system. Brackets, enclosures, chassis, frames and structural weldments, prototype through production.
Overview
Welding Is In-House at MJM
Yes, MJM welds. Our welding department works next to our five Amada lasers, nine press brakes and machining center, so a weldment is cut, formed, fitted, welded, inspected and packed in the same 44,000 sq ft building. One purchase order, one quality system, one point of contact.
Every weld is made to a written, qualified Welding Procedure Specification (WPS) backed by a Procedure Qualification Record (PQR), by a welder holding a current performance qualification to the applicable AWS code. After welding we take care of powder coat, paint, anodize, plating and passivation, then assembly and final inspection, so you receive finished parts.
Processes
Four Welding Processes
9 IPG LightWELD handheld fiber laser welding systems, up to 2 kW, 3 of them with Serra LightWIRE dual wire feed. Low heat input, minimal distortion and narrow, clean welds on thin-gauge stainless, aluminum and carbon steel. More on fiber laser welding.
Manual TIG on carbon steel, stainless steel and aluminum. Our choice for precision and cosmetic welds, fillet and groove joints, and aerospace work to AWS D17.1.
Semiautomatic MIG, including spray-transfer aluminum qualified to AWS D1.2, and structural steel to AWS D1.1. For heavier sections, frames, bases and structural weldments.
3 Sciaky spot welders (75, 100 and 200 kVA) for sheet metal assemblies: chassis, enclosures, panels and brackets joined without filler or distortion.

Certifications
Welding Codes and Qualifications
Fusion Welding for Aerospace Applications. Lockheed Martin approved: supplier survey completed February 2019, approval code WLZDW17110, status Approved. Production welds have also been inspected by an independent AWS Certified Welding Inspector to D17.1 Class B. Read more.
Structural Welding Code, Steel. Carbon steel structural weldments: frames, bases, stands and plate assemblies, welded by qualified welders to written procedures.
Structural Welding Code, Aluminum. Qualified GMAW procedure on 6061-T6 with ER4043 filler (2025). Welder qualifications renewed August 2025, witnessed by an AWS CWI, guided bend tests passed. GTAW aluminum qualifications on 5052 also on file.
Sheet Metal Welding Code. Qualified GTAW procedures for carbon steel (radiographic, visual and tensile results acceptable), stainless steel (300 series, ER308L) and 5052 aluminum.
Copies of WPS, PQR and welder qualification records are available on request, along with weld maps for your part. All welding runs under our AS9100 Rev D and ISO 9001:2015 quality system. See all certifications.
Materials
Materials We Weld
- Carbon steel: cold rolled, hot rolled and galvanized sheet and plate
- Stainless steel: 300 series, including 304 and 316 / 316L
- Aluminum: 5052, 6061 and other 5xxx and 6xxx alloys
- Thickness: thin-gauge sheet through plate. Our in-house cutting capacity is mild steel to 1 in. and stainless and aluminum to 5/8 in.; send the drawing and we will confirm the weld procedure that covers it.
All raw material is US-sourced with mill certifications, with full traceability from receipt to shipment.
Quality
Weld Inspection and NDT
- Visual weld inspection on every weldment, to the acceptance criteria of the applicable AWS code and your drawing.
- Independent AWS Certified Welding Inspectors witness and certify our procedure and welder qualification tests.
- NDT: when your drawing or contract calls for radiographic, penetrant, magnetic particle or ultrasonic testing, it is performed by qualified independent NDT laboratories whose personnel are certified to NAS 410 / ASNT SNT-TC-1A, and their reports ship with your parts. MJM does not employ an in-house NDT Level III.
- Dimensional inspection of weldments by portable CMM and optical measurement, first article inspection reports per AS9102, and a Certificate of Conformance with every shipment.
Straight Talk
Where MJM Is Not the Right Fit
We are not a heavy structural steel shop: building beams and large field-erected structures belong with a structural fabricator. And we do not have an in-house NDT Level III; volumetric NDT goes to a qualified lab.
Where we win is precision: welded sheet metal and plate assemblies that also need laser cutting, forming, machining, hardware and a tight tolerance stack, from one prototype to production quantities, with the paperwork aerospace and defense customers expect.
FAQ
Welding Questions We Hear
Does MJM Manufacturing do welding in-house?
Yes. MJM performs fiber laser, TIG, MIG and resistance spot welding in-house at its Miami Gardens, Florida facility, under an AS9100 Rev D and ISO 9001:2015 quality system.
What welding certifications does MJM hold?
MJM welds to AWS D17.1 (Fusion Welding for Aerospace Applications) with Lockheed Martin approval, AWS D1.1 (Structural Welding Code, Steel), AWS D1.2 (Structural Welding Code, Aluminum) and AWS D9.1M (Sheet Metal Welding Code), using qualified WPS, PQR and welder qualification records.
Is MJM Lockheed Martin approved for welding?
Yes. Lockheed Martin surveyed MJM to AWS D17.1/D17.1M:2017 in February 2019 and approved it under approval code WLZDW17110.
Does MJM have an NDT Level III?
MJM does not employ an in-house NDT Level III. Radiographic, penetrant, magnetic particle and ultrasonic testing are performed by qualified independent NDT laboratories with NAS 410 / ASNT SNT-TC-1A certified personnel when a drawing or contract requires them.
What metals can MJM weld?
Carbon steel, galvanized steel, 300 series stainless steel including 304 and 316L, and aluminum including 5052 and 6061, from thin-gauge sheet through plate.
Can MJM provide WPS and PQR documentation?
Yes. Copies of welding procedure specifications, procedure qualification records, welder qualifications and part weld maps are available on request.
